The future looks bleak... but... I'll survive, InsyaAllah I will... Pray for me brothers and friends...
Liza, I shall try to respond to your request for book review on this particular book but where to start really? This book is already titled 'brief' and his brevity from Chapter 1 to Conclusion Chapter is 191 pages!!! I have finished up to Chapter 3 which is based on Newtonian physics and Einstein's Relativity Theory. That itself is already mind boggling. Next he's moving on to QUANTUM MECHANICS which to many is like reading an alien language.. So Liza, why give me such torturous assignment.. Why? Why? Why?? Anyway, I'll try my darnest and please understand that you need to read the book itself to understand fully as Prof Hawkings start from the very basic understanding of Universe and develop his story along the historical line to the present state of understanding.
Chapter 1 starts with Our Picture of The Universe, followed by Space and Time in Chapter 2 and The Expanding Universe in Chapter 3. Here the picture of the Universe developed is basing on two great theorems; Newtons's Laws of Motion and Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. I will not dwell on the pre Newton's views though elaborated by Prof Hawkings.
The basic question asked is whether the universe in unchanging, hence time has no beginning and end or changing and beginning at a definite point; the beginning of time. Our picture of the universe is described by 2 partial theories; Newtonian Physics and Einstein's Relativity Theory and The Quantum Mechanics. The former is applicable in the large scale world but breaks down upon reaching the sub-atomic domains in scale of a millionth of a millionth of an inch where Quantum Mechanics take over. Hawking try to assimilate both into a single unified theory that could explain everything.
Gravity is central to the concept. Newton breaks the ages old concept of static universe by saying that matter is in static state of rest or moving at constant speed unless acted upon by external force. This is very significant because such understanding shows that all laws of science is as applicable to a static person as per moving person; eg on a moving train. To the person in a moving train, a ball thrown upward would fall down in the same straight up-down path similiar to when he is on the static ground. However to a person on the train station looking at the train, the ball seems to move in a parabolic arch from when the other person throw the ball upward to when the the ball falls down some distance away as travelled by the train in that time. Hence the notion of an absolute position in space is dispelled with. However Newton still belief in absolute time.
Newton's discovery of gravity is central to understanding universe. The planets orbit around the sun by gravitational force. Gravitational force is proportional to matter's mass. As a planet moves, the gravity would pull it back, hence its path curves inward to form an orbit of ellipsical path. This understanding enables us to predict the path of orbiting objects in space quite accurately. However observations show that not everything obey Newton's laws, hence there must error in this understanding.
Then comes Einstein. This guy abandon the concept of absolute time and put forth the General Theory of Relativity in which space and time is relative to the observers at different state of speed; hence each observer has his own time and space. A person travelling nearing the speed of light would come back younger than the other person on earth. This is because the traveller carries his own time which is more elongated, eventhough they age at the same rate. However the speed of light is constant irrespective of the speed of the observers. The speed of light becomes the barrier that cannot be passed by any matter, explained by his famous Equation E = mc2. As mass increases, so too the energy needed to increase its speed. As mass approaches speed of light, the amount of energy needed to increase the speed further approaches infinity which is not possible. As such the speed of light will never be exceeded.
Einstein also claimed that gravity is a very special kind of force created by the space-time warp. Space-time warped in proximity to heavy mass. Hence near celestial bodies, the space-time warp in curved shape. Bodies moving in the space-time warp still follow a straightline path but it is in the curved space called geodesic which is the shortest or longest path between 2 nearby points. Following the geodesic, the body appears to move in orbit as if by a force named gravity.
The next great finding of the 20th Century is that the Universe is expanding. Hubble's work on measuring the size and distance of distance galaxies by measuring the brightness of the stars lead to the finding that the spectra emitted by distance stars were quite uniformly shifted towards the red end of the spectra. Using Doppler Effect, this translate to the finding that the universe is expanding, the further away the faster it is expanding. Modern telescopes confirm Hubble's finding and detected 100,000 millions galaxies each containing 100,000 million stars slowly rotating.
Friedmann, 1922 proposes 3 models of the expansion; a) Expand and retract back under gravity b) Expand faster than critical speed so gravity no able to pull it back, hence continues at constant speed c) Expand just above critical speed and constantly reducing rate afterward. From this comes the idea of The Big Bang as the start of the Universe. At Big Bang, the size of Universe is infinitely small and mass infinitely high. This start/beginning is called Singularity. However there is still dispute as to whether singularity is a 'could have happen' or 'must have happen' phenomena. Various possibilities were proposed to avoid the conclusion of singularity which speaks of divine intervention. However they all fall short and at last Penrose discovery on blackholes in 1965 lead to confirmation by Penrose-Hawkings Study in 1970 that The Universe Must Start at Singularity.
However, all science theories are based on assumption that space-time that is smooth and almost flat. At Big Bang, the curvature of Space-Time must approach infinity because of the infinitely small and infinitely heavy mass of the founding universe. Hence all science theories must break down at Singularity (Big Bang). This follows that TIME MUST BEGIN at Singularity whence the laws of science start to form....
Next Chapter will be on Quantum Mechanics..
Today I visited Kinokuniya at KLCC, having to attend kursus the next day. This is the place I hate to come knowing that I might not be able to control myself. I am right. I ended up with 5 books instead of one.
For quite sometimes I had the intention of buying Stephen Hawking's famed book; A brief History of Time. As you might know this is not the type of book you can get at any bookshop. It is a book for enthusiasts, a book of science, physics told in common language. That is what I was informed by the many book reviews I have read on this book.
Stephen Hawking is the living Einstein. What is amazing about this man is that he is an OKU, a disabled person with motor nueron disability and practically living on wheel chair. His conditioned worsened from University days to practically incapable of any phyisical acivity including speech. However there in UK, it seems people appreciate rare talent. His disablity prevented him from exploring the physical world, so he is reduced to researchs in theoretical physics.
When his speech became incomphrehensible, a computer specialist develop a speech analyser that works on menu driven word search that get signal from head tilt, eye movement and other small movements to generate sentences to enable him to function and communicate. Latter it was fitted to his wheel chair. From it he could manage 15 words a minute. And yet he wrote books and journals and one of the best physicist in the world. This OKU took Einstein world to another dimension, when others could hardly comphrehend Einstein. And I have just bought this book of his.
Back to my story. Physic have always fascinate me. It was the subject I could envision, unlike chemistry which is beyond my logic. I can see the working in my mind's eye. When my children could not get along with physics, I could not understand it. How can they not love this subject that explains the working of the universe. How can they not be intrigue by this subject? Incredulous.
One of the best book on this that I have read is The Dancing Wu Li Masters. This book equate Zen to Physics; two diametrically opposed school of thinking. While Zen dwelved on the opposing philosophy, seeing opposites as one whole truth, physics relies heavily on the physical world that could be touch, experiment, measured and derive a conclusion from. It develop from the theory of atom to Plank's probability theory to Einstein Relatity and Time-space warp. That was the height of physics as we know it. Hawkings I heard expanded where Einstein left off. Where? That's what I want to find out.
However as browse through the Science Section, more eyes popping and mind boggling ideas were put into books. There's a book called Parallel World by Michio Kaku. OMG, is this physics or Hollywood? Soon we might hail Steven Spielberg as the next Physicist aftee Einstein and Prof Hawkings. Anyone who have watch The One starring Jet Li would know what I mean. And this scientist hailed as one of the gurus of modern physic is WRITING A PHYSICS Book on this.. Unbelievable, totally unbelievable. And I bought this book too!!!!!!!!
Now I'm rediscovering my passion for physics. It seems physics is now provoking the remote possibilities of probable truth. If Max Planck's theory is applicable here, probable possibility is truth waiting to be discovered. If the past trend can be based on, the more discoveries are made the nearer it is to the Words of God, the more the 'mutasyabihat' verses that we believe as faith requires take a more definitive shape. I'm just thrill, just trill at the possibilities..
Is there such a thing as Hari Raya Puasa 6? Actually no. But it is common now to celebrate in a small way the success for completion of Puasa 6. My wife too completed hers yesterday and coincidentally or not, Fadhil and Nana came back; Fadhil arrive at 10.45pm last night and Nana 2.45am this morning.
So IN had something to celebrate. As usual our show of celebration is makan. So she cooked her special Nasi himpit kuah kacang with satay goreng.. Nowadays however the nasi himpit is commercial; just buy the plactic packed rice and cook at home; guaranteed.. unlike home made before where the nasi himpit outcome can be a big let down; a bit too much water would render it like hardened mashed potato.. refused to be compacted under tonnes of surcharge.. those with Engineering background would understand this phenomena related to optimum moisture content for compactability..
Not satisfied with that she had to cook lontong plus Nasi Ayam as well plus pudding also.. I dont know what else coming out of her kitchen latter today... Now is that celabration or what??
Looks good and should reach the site in the nick of time before the Bomba Vehicle arrive. However with the bare minimum equipment it can carry and only one rider (the passenger area taken up by equipment) how much can the lone ranger do to ease the situation...
However I can only say SYABAS to Bomba for the initiative..
I had lunch at a Gulai Kawah Kedai Makan at Sungai Ular and was caught by this ad on the table. So I ordered one; cost just Rm2. It is unique and does it taste as good?? Well... good to try one but not that you'll be dreaming every night for it afterwards.. It is OK, with some cendol flavor.. I was informed that you need to sip each layer and savor the taste before mixing, otherwise it is just like ordinary Teh Ais..
This is the living room of my late mother's house (she's affectionately called Mek, the way Kelantanese called a beloved, respected elderly lady). Mek wanted a wooden floor and so it was before; the flooring was of Seraya Kitam, a hardwood with cedar like surface and color tone. The house was built in a watery place and column stumps. After long years the wooden stump rotted and was replaced by brick walls supporing the timber beams. Though the tukang suggested a change to tiled concrete floor, she refused, prefering timber flooring.
Now she had passed away. After I moved to Kuantan, I decided to moved in to her house and let go my house for rental, partly for economic reason and partly in remembrance of her. After inspection, the floor was already wobbly and unsafe. So I had it repaired. I filled in the entire area under floor with sand and finished with concrete. Since only part of the wooden floor can be used, we decided to refurbish the floor and used them on the centre portion. The rest were finished off with tiles.. This is the outcome..
This is the kitchen where Mek spent much time. She's passionate about the kitchen. The cabinet was built after she saw my cabinet next door (I used to live next door 20 years ago). The cabinet was solidly built and had withstood many cycles of flood. Sweeping and mopping the floor, we could not help but remember her. Every part of the house brings memory of her. This is one reason why we had to move in here. At the end there is the sink and her work place; preparing food and air teh for us; especially for me who loved her air teh.. Every inch of the place was kept spotless clean, even when she was hobbling around in her ageing condition still caring for my younger sister who was down with schizophrenia; a thankless, heart wrenching job only sustainable by a mother whose love is bottomless..
This is the most memorable place of all. This is where Mek used to sit, watching her plants. This steps were never seen in unkempt condition. It was always spotlessly clean. She sits here expecting for her children to visit, always expecting. The smile on her face can be seen a mile away when one visits especially the one farthest away who has a special place in her heart.
This is her bathroom. I felt her presence at every inch of it. She had the toilet bowl set higher when she had difficulty sitting down. I used to come to repair this and that.. leaking here, loose there, dripping here, etc.. I was her repairman until I could not manage the many small repairs and asked her to engage a REAL repairman. In her eyes, there's nothing I cannot do..
This is the front view - Tsunami Shelter!!! It was an Arabic media school under Yayasan Islam Kelantan. Before this building was up, we could see inside the school compound, watch the morning assembly and students to and fro the classroom. Now it is like a huge wind shelter blocking everything. Even the front entrance was changed to sideway.
We cleaned the house in prepation for the move in on the 5th Hari Raya. Next day we expected the transporter to start loading and unloading..
This is how my house at Taman Bahagia looked after much of the furnitures and things were transported over. This day we worked to and fro, from our house to Mek's house; transfering items left over; pots and pans, cups and glasses, kitchenware, carpets and odd things. It was a tiring job. For my age and diabetic condition it was an agony; my bones creaks, my limbs croaks, my muscles felt like being stretched by cable tensioner and I end up walking like a half-built robot..
So to comfort ourselves we decided to have dinner at a nearby Sri Chiengmai Restaurant. The Tom Yam was just delicious. Others are normal; not bad but also not enough for you to go ranting about giving free promotion!!!
Next day (Sunday) is another backbreaking task. My wife asked me to ask for another day off. My son Fadhil was dilly dallying and in the end Nana hand to send him off to SM Teknik Terengganu and came back again the same day - 6 hours journey. Eti's bus to UiTM was Sunday Night and Nana drove to UTP Tronoh the next day; Monday 28th. The finishing part was left to me and In.. a few pots of flowers, final cleaning up and final tidying up, including putting up the pictures and decors on the wall. The end result are ... habitable place and shrieking muscles and limbs. However with some Yoko ointment, I managed to drive back to Kuantan and arrived at 11.00pm... Next day is working day; a factory visit to Kuala Terengganu... Well let tomorrow take care of itself.. ZZZZZZZzzzz
Third day of Hari Raya. We decided to stay home and invite the close families to our hoouse.
I was most happy to hear from a dear friend that he's coming over to KB and planning to visit us.. Here he is with family; wife and eldest son. For the blogging communities, he needs no introduction.
Having an 'close open house' is great eventhough tiring. It is really fulfilling to have friends and families coming over to visit and enjoying the food and company. By 5.00pm all those we expected to arrive have gone. My BIL called around 4.00pm saying he could not make it because of abnormal traffic jam around Pulau Melaka, Kedai Lalat area.. Only after 6.30pm did we go to my friend's open house.. Of course the first few minutes was spent giving excuses for the late visit.. We were supposed to go to a cousin's wedding (her daughter) but decided to call the day off; not willing to queue at this late hour..
Today we started the day by visiting the neighbours. As we were about to lock the house to visit my nephew's open house. guests started to come. So we had to entertain them the best we could (we had planned to give open house tomorrow). After they left we quickly closed the door and on our way to Wakaf Che Yeh to my nephew's house. It was already quite late (3.00pm).
By the end of the day, this is what is left...
Tudung pun tercabut..
